KAT SMOLYNEC-ARTIST STATEMENT
“You can take the Babushka out of Blacktown , but you can’t take the Blacktown out of the Babushka.”
Referencing my proud Ukrainian and Western Suburbs upbringing, I have created a series of life size soft sculpture Babushka dolls. I have used Flannelette material to represent a social stereotypical code of the Western Suburbs and the classic Babushka shape to reference my Ukrainian heritage. As a sort of temporal street tagging,I have created paste-ups of photographs of my Babushkas in significant and meaningful locations experienced by my family and I in Sydney.
